Frequently Asked Questions
+ WHAT IS C-SATS?
C-SATS is a performance assessment and improvement platform. C-SATS collects intra-operative surgical videos and assesses the technical performance in the video and provides feedback to the surgeons through an online appraisal.
+ HOW IS MY VIDEO GRADED?
C-SATS uses validated assessment tools such as GEARS and GOALS to objectively measure surgical skill. These are short and generally procedure-agnostic tools curated by academic surgeons.
+ WHO GRADES MY VIDEO?
Pre-screened reviewers grade surgical performances.
+ WHO ARE THE REVIEWERS?
A large panel of pre-qualified reviewers, which includes surgeons, physician assistants, and registered nurse first assistants. The key to obtaining an objective and accurate score is to acquire multiple data points from a large panel of reviewers.
+ CAN I SELECT WHO REVIEWS MY VIDEO?
Yes. Depending on the type of feedback you would like to see, your institution can work with C-SATS to customize the reviewer panel.
+ WHICH TYPE OF CASES SHOULD I SEND IN?
In order to obtain an accurate (and anonymous) comparison to other surgeons in your specialty, C-SATS recommends sending in cases from our approved list of procedures. This will also enhance the learning opportunities provided by our platform.
+ WHAT SPECIALTIES AND PROCEDURE TYPES HAS YOUR PLATFORM BEEN VALIDATED ON?
C-SATS has done extensive research in different specialties and modalities. This list is a sample of some of the specialties and procedures C-SATS has assessed.
A complete list of published research can be found on our Validation page. Research projects that are ahead of print or under review by medical journals are on-going and will be posted when released.
+ When will I get my appraisal?
Turnaround time is usually one week.
+ How do I access my APPRAISAL?
You will be sent an email with a link to access your appraisal when it is published. Or you can log in and select Assessments to see all your appraisals.
+ What is in my APPRAISAL?
Your video with timestamped comments, a graph displaying your domain scores, and learning opportunities based on your scores.
+ How is my percentile calculated?
Your percentile is calculated against all surgeons in your specialty who
(a) used the same surgical method as you and
(b) were assessed with the same method (for instance, GEARS).
+ Who will see my APPRAISAL?
If you are a member of a group, you and the group owner will be able to access your appraisal.
If you are an individual, only you will be able to access your appraisal.
+ How are videos recorded in the OR?
C-SYNC can connect directly with your hospital’s existing media capture devices. If your hospital is lacking media capture and storage, C-SYNC Plus provides a media capture solution directly from medical equipment, including surgical towers and robots.
+ How are videos transferred to C-SATS?
C-SYNC provides enterprise clients with secure, robust and reliable synchronization of media from the hospital to C-SATS' HIPAA-secure cloud storage. By connecting directly with your hospital’s existing media capture devices, C-SYNC minimizes the time and effort required to upload videos to C-SATS. If your hospital is lacking media capture and storage, C-SYNC Plus provides a media capture solution directly from medical equipment, including surgical towers and robots.
+ Who is responsible for transferring the videos to C-SATS?
C-SATS works with your institution to train your OR personnel to handle all the processing of videos so there is no impact on your day-to-day operations.

+ What is the medical and legal liability for me submitting a surgical video to C-SATS for assessment?
C-SATS recommends the information generated from the system be used for quality improvement purposes, and C-SATS can comply with your institutions' Patient Safety Organization (PSO) guidelines. Our team has created a virtual environment that allows us to store Patient Safety Work Product (PSWP) within the Patient Safety Evaluation System (PSES) as defined by PSO. By making C-SATS a part of your institution’s quality improvement and patient safety program, the information may be afforded peer review protection in a court of law.
+ Is the data secure?
C-SATS complies with applicable standards, implementation specifications, and requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). C-SATS is also fully prepared to work directly with Patient Safety Organizations, as defined by the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005.
